In the past, the girls’ varsity basketball team faced tough seasons with strings of losses that were difficult to overcome. However, these struggles seem to be behind them, as this year’s team has shown significant improvement and determination in working for a playoff spot.
As a returning player to the program, sophomore Sofia Vargas said that she has been amazed by the growth the team has made over the last two seasons.
“We have a very determined team that is always putting in work,” Vargas said. Our underclassmen are learning from our seniors who are great leaders.”
Since November, the varsity squad has been developing their chemistry on the court. After building their strengths and addressing weaknesses, they finished their pre-season schedule with an impressive 7-3 record. Their momentum continued into districts, where they secured a 5-3 record in the first round, placing them in fourth place in district 6.
“It’s exciting how we leveled up against better competition in a new district,” Vargas said.”
Heading into the second round of district play, the team knew they had to maintain or improve their standing to qualify for the playoffs. To secure a spot, they needed to defeat higher-ranked teams, including their cross-town rivals, the Prosper Eagles.
“We have been going over things we need to work on while continuing to practice our strengths to make sure we are prepared,” sophomore guard Addisyn Johnson said. “We have also been putting up extra shots to enhance our game.”
Despite thorough preparation, the Blue Hawks faced a tough challenge against Prosper. The Eagles’ efficiency on both sides of the court made it a challenging game. Although the Blue Hawks didn’t get the outcome they had hoped for, the team remained focused on the bigger picture.
Sophomore Sofia Read was the leading scorer of the night, tallying 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
“[I’m] continuing to keep the same confidence I had in the Prosper game,” Read said. “The Mckinney Boyd game will arguably be one of the season’s most important games. If my team and I bounce back and refocus, we can play our game and hopefully emerge with the victory.”
On Tuesday, the team fought hard at McKinney Boyd and secured a close win. This victory puts them back in fourth place, making them playoff eligible once again. The remainder of the season will be crucial for the Blue Hawks as they compete with Allen for the final playoff spot on Jan. 24.
“We are gonna take one game at a time to do what it takes to earn our spot in the postseason,” Read said.
