The Allen City Council has voted to move forward with negotiations for a potential Kalahari Resorts & Conventions waterpark in Allen. While not yet finalized, the project could include a hotel, convention center and various entertainment amenities.
Kalahari, a well-known indoor waterpark chain, features a variety of attractions, including restaurants, arcades, lounging areas, shops, and an array of waterslides.
“I think it would be fun for myself and also my kids to go to, especially since it’s so close in proximity,” entrepreneurship teacher Kaley Brejcha said. “I do, however, think it’s going to just bring more traffic, especially after we already have the new Universal being built and the PGA headquarters being moved here.” Kaley Brejcha, Rock Hill entrepreneurship teacher states.
The proposed resort is estimated to bring $5 billion to the city within 10 years of opening. Over 40 years, city officials are estimated to collect 390 million in property taxes. The Allen Economic Development Corporation is negotiating a contract to purchase 123 acres for the resort.
“We go to Kalahari often, me and my little girls,” technical theater teacher Denton Davies said. “We travel to Round Rock, which is a long way to go, and Allen is much closer. I think that initially at first, there will be some growing pains in regards to traffic, but with all the income they have, that it will overall help to improve the infrastructure.”
AP World History teacher Catherine Natale shares the same enthusiasm.
“I think it’s pretty exciting,” Natale said. “I am excited for this to come to Allen, especially so close to us, to be able to have another option for our kids during the summer.”
If the lease agreement proceeds, construction is set to begin building no later than 2030, though officials anticipate an earlier start.
