After theater students successfully campaigned at the Prosper Town Hall, the Town of Prosper officially declared March as Theatre in Our School’s Month.
This designation allows students to advocate for the benefits of theater in education as well as theater can help their community. To celebrate, students and faculty plan to host various events and activities throughout the month.
“Theatre in Our Schools Month is important because it recognizes theater as something valuable to the education system and to the growth and development of students in Prosper ISD and all around Texas,” theater president Mack Flowers said.
This month also allows students to share the direct benefits from being in theater, such as fostering critical thinking, improving public speaking skills and encouraging self-expression.
“Being a part of theater has helped me be a leader,” social media chair Rachel Wilson said. “Being on the officer team has allowed me to grow my communication skills and how to deal with people that I don’t share viewpoints with.”
Many students at Rock Hill take a theater class at some point during their high school years, where they build connections, gain confidence and develop new skills. Freshman Andrea Albors-Morales, who is currently enrolled in advanced theater, has been learning more about herself and others through the program.
“Once I joined the theater department, I learned how to make friends and I found my people,” Albors-Morales said.
Beyond the school environment, the month encourages community engagement with theater. Theater departments contribute by recognizing local theaters and inviting residents to upcoming productions. Students are encouraged to participate by volunteering or participating in productions.
“Our department plans on posting tips and facts on our social media to spread awareness all around Prosper,” theater social chair Lucy Rutig said.
Theater vice president Maddie Coleman has outlined several initiatives to create a meaningful and positive impact within the school community during March.
“We are going to celebrate by having theme days, dress up days, show buddies, and our public performance of our UIL One Act Play ‘David’s Mother,’” Coleman said.
