One of the greatest traditions during the holiday season is watching movies with family and friends. This time of year is the perfect time to enjoy heartwarming films that capture the spirit of Christmas. Here are ten must-watch movies that embody the joy, laughter, and magic of the holidays.
10 – “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” (1966)
This classic film has everything a Christmas movie needs–in just 26 minutes. A villain tries to destroy Christmas only to discover its true meaning instead. The film’s signature song, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” still resonates today and is a great addition to any holiday playlist. Overall, this movie is a timeless classic despite its short run time.
9 – “A Charlie Brown Christmas”
Another short and sweet film, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” follows Charlie Brown’s search for the true meaning of Christmas. With the help of his friends, he learns that Christmas is all about goodwill and charity rather than commercialism and receiving gifts. Featuring memorable music by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, this film has become another beloved classic.
8 – “The Muppet Christmas Carol”
A classic based on a classic, this movie is extremely funny and heartwarming at the same time. It tells the same story as “A Christmas Carol,” but with the hilarious Muppets playing most of the characters. Michael Caine as Ebeneezer Scrooge delivers an excellent performance, especially considering he was interacting with a bunch of puppets.
7 – “The Nightmare Before Christmas”
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” is perfect for the holidays, as it can be enjoyed from Halloween all the way to Christmas. Directed by Tim Burton, this film is both chilling and heartwarming, a perfect mix of Halloween and Christmas.
6 – “A Christmas Story”
Set in the 1940s, “A Christmas Story” follows a young boy who wants nothing more than a BB gun. With its witty narration, iconic moments, and the famous phrase, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”, this film has become a staple during the holiday season.
5 – “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”
“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is a hilarious holiday classic. Chevy Chase stars as Clark Griswold, a dad trying to create the perfect Christmas for his family, but everything goes hilariously wrong. With its silly humor, memorable quotes, and wild holiday mishaps, it’s a great watch for anyone during this festive time.
4 – “It’s a Wonderful Life”
Although it leans toward the more somber side, “It’s a Wonderful Life” remains a great pick for the holidays. The story follows a relatable main character who becomes overwhelmed during the holidays and reaches a personal crisis. An angel intervenes, showing him how his life has positively impacted his town and loved ones, ultimately reminding him of his worth and the true meaning of the season.
3 – “Elf”
In “Elf,” Buddy, a human who thinks he is an elf, embarks on comedic antics in New York City where he meets and befriends his family while trying to find his place in the hustle and bustle of urban life. This film is another that is both heartwarming and hilarious at the same time, making it a fun watch.
2 – “Home Alone”
Unsurprisingly, this hilarious film follows a child who finds himself left home alone after his family flies to Paris without him. Full of laughs, heart, and memorable moments, it’s a holiday classic perfect for the whole family.
1 – “Klaus”
A lesser-known gem that came out just a few years ago, “Klaus” offers an amazing take on the origin of Santa. It follows a self entitled man assigned to a backwater town and becomes their postman. He meets a reclusive old man named Klaus, and together they start the tradition of delivering gifts at night. This story beautifully illustrates friendship and redemption, making it my favorite Christmas movie.
