Many people are familiar with “Harry Potter,” but few know about the Puffs. Fans of “Harry Potter” will enjoy this comedic spoof of the series.
The most famous wizard of our generation has returned, but this show is not his adventure. This time, the Hufflepuffs, or Puffs, are the stars of the show.
“It’s very magical, but it is a comedy,” theatre teacher and “Puffs” co-director Sariea Haney said. “It is lots of fun and it is based on Harry Potter. So, even if you haven’t seen Harry Potter, it will still be a really fun show to watch, but it also has inside jokes for people who are fans of the books and movies.”
In the original series, the four houses are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. This spoof renames them the Braves, the Puffs, the Smarts and the Snakes. Unlike the original Harry Potter franchise where it’s told from Harry’s perspective, “Puffs” follows students in the ‘Hufflepuff’ house.
The tech department worked their own magic backstage, creating sets and props reminiscent of the movies.
“Puffs has over 200 props in it and everything in it that requires fast transitions relies on ‘magic,’” theatre teacher and “Puffs” co-director Kirsten King said. “So, the tech side of this show is extremely complicated and takes a lot of perfection. Like, you can’t get ‘kinda’ something right or it doesn’t look good.”
The directors chose this show because it allowed for flexibility in cast size.
“It allowed for a lot of people to be involved because there was no set number of Puffs, which allowed for growth in the theatre department,” King said. “And we also wanted to get something that most students were familiar with. And both of us are huge Harry Potter fans.”
“It’s been pretty good,” Freshman Aaliya Dini said, who plays a Puff and founder of the Ravenclaw house. “I really like the people there and all of us have a love for theatre and the directors are amazing.”
