May 4, 2023
The Met Gala is one of the most highly-anticipated events in the fashion world. This year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” pays homage to the late designer’s career. Lagerfeld was known for his love of high-collared shirts, black and white color palettes, tweed, pearls, structured silhouettes, quilting, and leather gloves. Here are the top ten looks of the night:
Anne Hathaway – Actress Anne Hathaway made an appearance at the Met Gala for the first time since 2018. Hathaway arrived in a white tweed Versace gown with gold ornamental safety pins and pearls. As for accessories, she wore matching tweed gloves, a diamond Bulgari choker, and white platform pumps. Hathaway’s look was elegant and perfectly fit the theme.
Jennie Kim – Blackpink singer Jennie Kim made her debut at the Met Gala wearing a vintage Chanel mini dress originally designed by Lagerfeld. The white bustier dress was decorated with a camellia and ribbon above the waist. Kim accessorized with black accents–tights, elbow-length opera gloves and pumps. A white camellia was pinned to her slicked hair, matching the one on her dress. As for jewelry, she wore a black choker and diamond earrings. Her look was elegant and refined.
Jenna Ortega – Actress Jenna Ortega wore an outfit with a similar style to her character Wednesday Addams in the Netflix show “Wednesday.” Ortega’s black Thom Browne corset dress featured several frills and ruffles. This was paired with a blouse and a tweed bolero jacket. The punk accessories, including sheer knee-high socks and platform brogues, added a touch of edge to the overall look. Her goth-glam look paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s designs – including a bow-tied blouse, pearls and gold chains.
Gigi Hadid – Supermodel Gigi Hadid made a statement at the Met Gala with a custom-made Givenchy sheer black gown with a draped train and a strapless bustier. The look featured hip cutouts and a ruched center, which she paired with sheer black tights and black pumps. Hadid accessorized the look with Lagos jewelry, including a pearl and diamond choker and diamond stud earrings.
Anok Yai – Supermodel Anok Yai wore a gold metallic mini dress by American designer Prabal Gurung. The flared silhouette of the dress was striking, with streams of silver flowing down to her Jimmy Choo strappy heels. A lightweight brown train floated behind her. Yai’s look featured crystals, brown statement sunglasses, and opera gloves. These touches– along with her dewy glow– perfectly completed the look.
Bad Bunny – Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny arrived at the Met Gala in an all-white, tweed, backless Jacquemus suit. The focal point of the look was definitely the 26-foot-long floral train. His hair was slicked back and he wore pearl stud earrings.
Ava Max – Singer Ava Max attended the Met Gala in an ivory column gown adorned with over 6,000 crystals and pearls which perfectly matched her headpiece. The gown’s tulle train added a touch of elegance to the ensemble.
Conan Gray – Singer Conan Gray wore a custom Balmain look to the Met Gala, the inspiration being Lagerfeld’s 1920s art deco fan, which was reflected in the design’s use of pearl beading and black-and-white color scheme. Gray’s fringed off-the-shoulder tweed redingote jacket featured a high v-neck tailored collar. Gray wore a black tie and black embroidered camellia, making the outfit more detailed.
Devon Aoki – Supermodel Devon Aoki attended the Met Gala for the first time this year. Aoki’s form-fitting gown was white at the top with a winged design and a jet-black, sparkling bottom.
Cardi B – Rapper Cardi B wore a black and white ensemble by Chinese designer Chen Pen to the Met Gala.. The outfit paid tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld with a tailored button-down and tie, while also referencing Chanel with the structural and voluminous skirt. The skirt was covered in huge sculptural rosettes, while the black bodice was adorned with silver studs. Cardi completed the look with matching black opera gloves and statement pearl and silver earrings.
